Adopt-A-Student Program 2 Years, 5 Months ago Karma: 2
The Alumni of the Sisters of Mary Inc. (ASMI-Cebu Chapter) in coordination with Sr. Teresita M. Prudente, SM and Sr. Ma. Socorro Riza S. Riva, SM, Boystown and Girlstown School Principal, respectively, have this Adopt-A-Student Assistance Program (ASAP) for chosen but deserving graduating student/s from the Sisters of Mary Boystown/Girlstown School – Cebu.
OBJECTIVE
Student
This Adopt-a-Student Assistance Program provides assistance to qualified graduate from the Sisters of Mary School on their way to college. Underlying this program is the belief that a student who exhibits talent and motivation, and whose family is committed to making their child’s education a priority, should be afforded the opportunity to experience a values-based and academically challenging educational assistance.
Graduate Sponsor/Donor
As the elder sons and daughters of Fr. Al, this Adopt-a-Student Assistance Program hopes to continue his apostolate in caring, educating and giving a bright future to our younger brothers and sisters through financial, material and emotional help as they step on college education.
This program also aims a deeper relationship among graduates through constant communication as it requires commitment and responsibility yet shared to everyone, voluntarily, notwithstanding the opportunity of each graduate sponsor/donor of having a personal and rewarding relationship to the younger siblings of the Sisters of Mary Family.
IDENTIFICATION OF THE SCHOLAR
• Should be highly recommended by the school principal
• Should belong to top 20 of the graduating class
• In case a scholar gets a grade lower than 2.5 or an average lower than 2 after the semester, the sponsors will use its judgment, on whether a child will still be considered for the program for the following semester.
• A profile for each scholar will be created, with the photo, the family background, the academic standing and other important details. Each profile will be available in the website where everyone, sponsors and non-sponsors, will be able to view.
• A possible sponsor may be invited by sending direct email or letter that bears the signatures of the School Principals both from the Boystown and Girlstown, and the current SMS Alumni President – Cebu Chapter.
• A sponsor may sign-up for the program through the website or write directly to the Sisters of Mary School in Talisay and Minglanilla, Cebu.
• Sponsors may choose to help a scholar in a specific town and/or specific course. The applicant scholars from these requested towns and/or courses will be given priority.
AMOUNT OF SPONSORSHIP & SENDING DONATIONS
Sponsorship maybe in cash, kind and/or time depending on how much can a sponsor share on the cost of the preferred course of the student/s plus the cost of living allowances (such as food, transportation, board and lodging rental, books, clothing, and other related expenses) per semester/year.
However, we also encourage sponsors with homes accessible to the preferred school/university of the scholar/s to accommodate them in their homes. As such it would just not lessen the board and lodging expenses of the scholar/s but also a shoulder to cry on in dire times.
Sponsors may send their donations by sending it in the bank account open specifically for this project via electronic transfer, check, bank transfer, or through credit cards. Sponsors may choose to send their donations annually. Letter of confirmations together with the statement wherein the amount of donations received are recorded will be sent to each sponsor.
COST OF SPONSORSHIP & DISBURSEMENT
All expenses paid will be supported by official receipts and/or expense voucher for other allowances that no corresponding receipts issued. Liquidation of all the expenses will be done monthly or as it needed/required.

DURATION OF SPONSORSHIP
The sponsorship program is good until the scholar/s graduates on his/her preferred course. However, assessment will be done after every semester if in extreme case, there’s a need to cancel the scholarship.

PROGRESS REPORT
There will be a semestral progress report of the sponsored scholar to be sent to the sponsors which will contain the update on the performance of the scholars. This will be sent to the sponsors via email or mail.

CORRESPONDENCE
A sponsor and a scholar are encouraged to write each other. This will ensure the good relationship between the sponsor and the scholar. It may be possible to create an email address where the scholars will send their mails to be screened by the committee before it is sent to the sponsor. The sponsor may also send their responses on the same email add.

GIFTS/NEEDS BEYOND SPONSORSHIP
A sponsor may give a scholar gifts may it be in cash and/or in kind for special occasions or as the sponsor would love to. However, it is recommended that all of the gifts will be addressed to the coordinator to avoid loss.

the graduates in KSA are all willing to share...united, we can!

Re:Adopt-A-Student Program 2 Years, 5 Months ago Karma: 1
I only have some questions though, i want to clarify...

who are implementing this? I mean, is there an independent body handling this project, or is it fully dependent upon the decisions of the sisters?

how is screening being done?...is it open to all, or for the top students only?...if so, it will be unfair to those students who wants to avail, but are not belonging to the top of the class...
it should be made available to all graduates who will pass the screening process by the screening committee, and not rely fully upon the recomendations...

the financing and disbursement of funds....receipts, vouchers, and the likes are not enough to prove that the funds went to it's intended purpose...if it's not monitored and counter monitored, it could create a window, an oppurtunity for corruption...handling funds, as we all know is a temptation...funds should be channeled, without being touched by human hands..and even the recipts should be counter checked for it's authenticity...

is it available for all the graduates of all the branches, or just for cebu graduates exclusively?
how about those graduates from cavite who wants to avail of it, and are qualified?...shall we deny it to them?

who will be the administering body of the project?...this is a long term commitment, once you get involved, there is no turning back, or the future of the schoolar is at risk...pag nag back out ang sponsor, paano na ang schoolar? mag stop ba siya sa school?...is there any concrrete plan to support this project?...what about the manpower who will administer it?....
I do not under estimate the capability of our own graduates, but the administration should be done by a highly qualified and experienced individuals...not just by those who are claiming that they can...

although it is the execution that matters, it should be supported by a perfect plan...

was there a copyright infringement as well in extending help? then the grad and Sister who made this possible and implemented should not have used the same word as you are all stealing the ideas of others.

nagkataon lang naman siguro na ganun lang din naisip nila since we are nga and will be adopting as what other grads did by welcoming some on their household and will be treated as family members instead of monetary donation solely...i reckon they wanted the mere ideas to be real in the soonest possible time thus, they only informed everybody about it and sought additional sponsors when it was already running.and as what they've mentioned, a second batch cebu grad who dont want his name to be known made it all possible in the very beginning.

Re:Adopt-A-Student Program 2 Years, 5 Months ago Karma: 1
Scholarship programs, financial assistance and wat ya may call it have been in existence since so long ago, and there is no such thing as stealing of ideas in activities like this! The proliferation of these awards or grants is a living proof that no one owns the original idea of sponsoring people for educational purposes. They have the same intention but only differs in areas like: beneficiaries, area of implementation, requirements, amount of grant and other things the sponsors may deem very necessary for the grant of the award!

Here are suggestions that I am offering that I thought may be of great help for the long-term existence of the program:

1. I guess the best to govern the implementation of this kind of program is the Alumni Association. Let this be one of the major projects the Association will undertake. Start small time and we don't know this may end up a big time project for the Association. Doing so may eliminate competition between batches of having their own scholarship program and may help strengthen the Scholarship program the Association may implement.

2. The Alumni Association will then create a Technical Resource Committee whose main function is to formulate operating policies and guidelines of the Scholarship program. The Technical Resource Committee should also come up with implementing procedures, scholarship requirements, beneficiary identification procedures, follow-up procedures and ways of raising funds for the Scholarship program.

3. The Technical Resource Committee will then submit a Technical Report for the approval of the Alumni officers. Discussions may occur during regular meetings and revisions should be made by the Technical Resource Committee based on suggestions of the Alumni officers.

4. Once the Implementing Guidelines of the Scholarship Program is approved, the Officers will now create Scholarship Committee who will serve as the Implementing Body of the Project.

5. The Scholarship Committee will be composed of a minimum of 5 members assigned to 5 sub-committees performing different functions:

a. Committee Chair - Chairs the Steering and Oversight Committee

b. Member 1 - Chairs the Screening Committee

c. Member 2 - Chairs the Academic Evaluation Committee

d. Member 3 - Chairs the Fund-Raising Committee

e. Member 4 - Chairs the Communication and Correspondence Committee

6. Financing of Scholarship Program, cash pay outs and liquidation should be done by the Treasurer of the Alumni Association. The Scholarship Committee therefore takes charge of the implementation of the program while the Treasurer (or Finance Committee of the Alumni Association) handles disbursement of funds.

So here you go! I hope I was able to tickle your mind and made you think of what could really be the best policy for implementation of this project.

These are just suggestions though! If you think you have more brilliant ideas that you can add, hey guys share it here! Or if you have violent reactions with my suggestions, speak up and be heard! Let's all join hands in helping one another! I guess that's the Aloysian spirit that should live within us!

Thanks for taking your time to read! LOLS;)

i think this project existed years ago spearheaded by the cebu nuns and supported by our
unacknowledged alumni and just recently posted in our community board for the reason that our site is new.
no stolen ideas here though they have similar intentions or objectives.

Hi,

Good morning!

I guess, we should be very careful w/ our words here. It hurts to read that there was a stealing of ideas. I made the guidelines all by myself. It's named Adopt-A-Student Assistance Program becoz it's not the usual scholarships grants. It's not merely providing financial assistance all the way, but it's more on graduate-student relationship. By the word adopt means we have to accommodate the students as our own family.

Though I apologize that the guidelines posted was not really the final draft. I just made it by myself as it comes in my mind. I mailed to my few friends for comments and suggestions. If you may observe, words were not really organize and well structured.

I wanted to answer all your queries but I'm running out of time. But surely, in time, I can answer it one by one and point by point.

Thanks kaayo. God Bless!

Re:Adopt-A-Student Program 2 Years, 5 Months ago Karma: 2
This is really good. I hope that the Alumni will institutionalize this project. I have great expectations for this. It even inspire me more to organize and to realize my dream scholarship foundation.. but Im still on early stage of planning, creating and registering that foundation.

On the concern of infringement, it is my opinion that there is really no infringement in the context of our laws that has been committed in here. The idea of helping is a universal thing that was conceived so long ago. A mere idea alone is not a protected matter in our copy or economic right laws because everyone could easily claim that he had conceived that idea. There is basically no monopoly of idea. However, the realization or substantiation of that idea will become a work protected by our copyright and patent laws. Moreover, in cases of infringement, copying alone is not what is prohibited. The copying must produce an “injurious effect”, so long as there will be no injurious effect to the author or orginator there will be no infringement.

Noteworthy however, is that we shall give our highest appreciation and regards to those who took large steps to materialize their endeavors to help SOM graduates in fulfilling their dreams. Let us recognized those unnamed alumni who shared their time and efforts to organize in this regard whether coursed through the almumni office or not. May your altruism be rewarded on earth and in heaven.

Who are implementing this?
>For now, I am the one handling this. Yes, dependent on the sister's recommendation but still the final decision rest with the sponsors.

How is screening being done? Is it open to all, or for the top students only?
>Recommendations from the sisters help a lot on the screening considering a numbers of graduates who want to avail of the said program. I guess everyone wants to be considered. But it's still dependent on the sponsors.

>It's not really top of the class, as I have posted earlier on my very first posting; the guideline posted was just a draft. I apologize for the early posting though it wasn't meant to be posted when I mailed it to my few friends. But selection still dependent on the sponsors.

It should be made available to all graduates who will pass the screening process by the screening committee, and not rely fully upon the recommendations.
>I am agreeable on this matter moving forward with the project.

The financing and disbursement of funds....receipts, vouchers, and the likes are not enough to prove that the funds went to its intended purpose...if it's not monitored and counter monitored, it could create a window, an oppurtunity for corruption...handling funds, as we all know is a temptation...funds should be channeled, without being touched by human hands..and even the recipts should be counter checked for it's authenticity...
>Yes, moving forward w/ the project. However, I beg to disagree on your opinion on the "Corruption and/or Mishandling of Funds" it maybe true to some but not to all.

Is it available for all the graduates of all the branches, or just for cebu graduates exclusively?
>For now, Cebu graduates only.

How about those graduates from Cavite who wants to avail of it, and are qualified? Shall we deny it to them?
>We have to be practical. It would be very hard for the in-charge or even to the execom to monitor the project if not within his radius of responsibility.

>For now, I'm the one administering for the said project. Personally, these are my concerns. I have my own share of uncertainties and fears, restless days and sleepless nights. But I do believe in PRAYER. Prayers really do make things possible.

I do not under estimate the capability of our own graduates, but the administration should be done by a highly qualified and experienced individuals...not just by those who are claiming that they can...

Just a thought:
I guess to implement a project; one should not complicate things especially on the first implementation. Maybe one must dream big but NOT think big on the initial process to make it easy. There's a big difference between the two words, dream and think. One may dream of having a foundation. It's nice, it's good and it's very normal. But upon implementation, one should not think of it like that. Surely, you'll have a hard time starting the project unless, of course, if from birth, one is really blessed financially.

FILING and REPORTING

PROGRESS REPORT. There will be a semestral progress report of the student to be sent to the alumni sponsors which will contain the update on the performance of the student. This will be sent via email or mail.
LIQUIDATION. All expenses paid will be supported by official receipts and/or expense voucher for other allowances that no corresponding receipts issued. Liquidation of all the expenses will be done monthly or as it needed/required.

FILES. Alumni office will be provided a copy of ALL the files concerning this project.

PROCEDURES

Any graduate of the Sisters of Mary may sign-up for the program to be a sponsor by sending an e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or write a letter to the Sisters of Mary School Talisay or Minglanilla, Cebu.

Sponsors may choose to help a student in a specific town and/or specific course. The applicant from these requested towns and/or courses will be given priority.

ASAP in-charge will collate, summarizes and communicate among the sponsoring graduates the assistance to be extended.

Contingency measures for possible problem, concern and issues shall be discussed and arranged accordingly prior to granting considering that the sponsorship program is good until the student graduate on his/her preferred course.

However, assessment will be done after every semester if in extreme case, there's a need to cancel the assistance.

Praise be the Lord!,..to the admin @ ASMSI-Cebu,...Alumni Association,..my email address is: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

I also want to tell about my problem this time but I dont know if I have to chance to be helped. I am 12 batch. When I was still inside the portals of the institution I belong to Section A and I was one of the contestants of the National Academic competitions. I also showed contributions to the school by being a rondalla mamber, a choir member, a student teacher and a contestant in academic challenges.

But life is just so unfair for deserving students like me. Before graduation, I was chosen to take the Tan Yan Kee scholarship but I was not able to pass the exam....So i did not dare trying other scholarships instead I reckon my aunt to support me. She tried but now she can't make it. She ran out of money and I could not help but now I almost lost hope if I could finish my course. I hope you guys could help me solve this. I want to finish a degree as what most of us dreamed of. I really think this as an opportunity for me to talk with you and ask for your help or even advice...Please help me....Im here in Cebu now and still looking for some opportunities.

this is a very beneficial project..
it will help those potential graduates of SOM who deserve to have a brighter future
but because of poverty, they cant finish college of even experience it.

I hope this project will become successful through the help of our graduates who indeed are
so blessed enough in life and are willing to share their blessings to their sisters and brothers.

This is great. There are really so many SOM grads who r very willing to study college and are very deserving. Yes, the right thing to do is for every applicant to undergo screening by the alumni who are into this stuff. Tama jud na dili basihan ang section or recommendations from sisters...Daghan graduate sa SOM na dili man higher section gikan pero very successful man pag college ug sa trabaho...Ang dapat, ang mga HS SOM grad should be guided on what cors ang bagay sa ila ug what cors ang in demand karon sa trabaho...pero obvious man kau na ang kailangan na mga cors karon kay Engineering(sobrang in demand),Technical courses(skilled worker po very in demand), nursing, IT, pwede rin seafarers, chefs...ndi po yung mga wlang bakante...pwede rin call center agent(sobrang dami bakante)...

I'm praying for this to be very successful.

I guess it is still kicking mhyce as based from the previous threads, this project has been rolling even before our website has commenced.

Rey Tabs, a token of suggestion. Why not donate the money directly to SOM instead of paying tuitions for SOM grads?

Lots of ways to continue our college schooling. Scholarship grants from other institutions... naghingalo na ang SOM kay gamay nalang ang donors/benefactors. Don't know if you all heard about the possibility of being privatize.

salamat sa imong brilliant suggestion wendell but i think I am not the right person for this. you can directly discuss your nice idea to Engrid or to any ASMSI-Cebu officers.

Received an email also with the same content asking for sponsorship.

This is a very good opportunity to reach out our bros and sis in need.
I would like to suggest that, profiles of the qualified scholars will be posted on the web, as well as the guidelines.

I'm not sure if this was properly advertised during alumni gathering, if it wasn't then we can propose this to all willing and committed graduates during alumni homecoming.

I am very much willing to participate in this but I really don't have time yet, to visit the school to ask information regarding this. I would really appreciate if guidelines and stuff will be posted online!

Thank you very much!

thanx bro erns... if in case mabrought up mo 'tong issue na ito sa alumni meeting natin.suggest ko lng sana kung payag nmn kau sa idea ko na sana ung funds na maiambag sa willing na magsuporta dito maging source na lng ito ng" study now pay later o student loan assistance " na mayroong kunting interest nang sa ganun kung ano ung maibalik nila, maitututulong din sa iba pang gustong mag aral na alumni natin at maging sa school natin na mas nangangailangan ng tulong natin. i believe kasi na di lng dapat matatalino ung bigyan natin ng chance kundi ung may mga ambisyon din at tiyaga mag -aral despite di cla gaanong magagaling na willing nmn sa mga conditions.suggestion lng po.. but am very willing to support this project.goodluck!!!!
